About Us

Our mission:

To restore democracy to America's food system in order to improve the health of our nation's citizens, family farms, communities, healthcare system, and environment.

Recipe For America is a netroots initiative, started by a group of bloggers on DailyKos.com. Our members range from farmers and food policy experts to regular folks who just like to eat. We are loosely modeling our project after another netroots group that preceded us, Energize America.

In order to restore democracy to America's food system, we wish to bring together the true experts who each have a stake in reforming the food system: parents, consumers, nutritionists, physicians, the food-insecure, family farmers, workers, environmentalists, and advocacy groups that represent them.

We wish to know the challenges Americans face in their lives with regards to food, and what can be done to alleviate them. We also wish to know the successes Americans have already had in reforming the food system. Once we can compile the problems and solutions from the many perspectives of those who make up our food system, we hope to propose a plan to our leaders in Washington. Let's remind them they are accountable to the people.

A Few More Details:
We've received emails asking "Who are you? Who funds you? Who's behind you?" Those are important questions to ask to understand where the points of view expressed on this site are originating.

The quickest question to answer relates to funding. We engage in limited fundraising, mostly among ourselves and other bloggers, to bring food policy activism to the Netroots Nation convention. Other than that, our group operates entirely without a budget of any sort.

This group was founded by Jill Richardson, who blogs as OrangeClouds115 on DailyKos and continues to write on this site under that name. Jill has no formal background in food policy, but she became passionate about it while working in healthcare and observing the consequences of the standard American diet. She is currently working on her first book, which will be about food issues.
